Jaswant book
What do you guys think about the expulsion of Jaswant Singh from the BJP over his Jinnah book? Of course the BJP looks confused and disjointed. Some people have said (in fact many people, even some secular kinds) that the trouble in BJP is bad for the country - that the country needs a good, solid opposition.

I think it is far more important that the BJP be destroyed than worrying about what kind of opposition there is. Some opposition or the other will always crop up, but the consequences of a bigoted party like the BJP surviving could be catastrophic.

I don't think it's gonna happen, but I would be delighted if the BJP self-destructs quickly.

Also, what is your opinion on the governement's performance in the first 100 days - I think some ministries are doing well, others not so much. Moily's mission to reduce case life from fifteen years to one year within three years will be an achievement of earth-shattering proportions if it is accomplished.

Reviving teh community
Hey peeps! I noticed there were a few people who joined this community. So, I am going to try to revive the discussion among secular Indians and post more often. I encourage all the members also to post and discuss how we can protect the noble religion of Hinduism from being perverted by the bigoted pseudo-nationalists. This is going to be our little sandbox :) Feel free to post anything that interests you - as long as it is related to India or politics etc. Hell even off-topic posts are ok once in a while :)

Bringing humiliation to Hinduism
Just heard the disturbing news that Dayanand Pandey, accused in the Malegaon blasts, has confessed to plotting the blasts along with Sadhvi Pragya. All of us who until a few years ago would have dismissed out of hand any suggestion of Hindutva organisations actually indulging in terrorist violence on the lines of Islamic terrorism now have the possibility staring them in the face.

For the Hindu society at large, it is a threat of colossal proportions. Hinduism, until now thought to be immune to perpetration of organized violence because of its philosophical underpinnings, is now being taken over by overtly violent organisations who seek to redefine the very core of Hinduism and make it saffron clone of the fundamentalist wings of other religions. In doing so, they are trying to kill the very soul of Hinduism and robbing it of its ideological foundations that have seen it through millenia of external aggression. Hindutva organisations are bringing shame and humiliation to Hinduism, a religion which has much to offer to the world in terms of spiritual guidance.

One hopes Hindus in general will know these charlatans for who they are and not let these terrorists steal their religion from them.

Muslims against terrorism

In a welcome and important step, clerics from the Deoband school of Islam in India resolved to fight terrorism and distanced themselves from all kinds of terror activities.

The resolution adopted at the Jamiat Ulema I Hind session said it was against any kind of terrorist activity and is ready to fight the menace with the help of others.

It made it clear that Islam does not allow killing of innocent people and is against disturbing peace in anyway.

The 6000 Muslim clerics at the session also approved a fatwa against terrorism.

Funny blog

I have a friend at work who has this very witty blog which, among other things, parodies news items and current developments. The author is a Muslim who is the exact opposite of the zealous, unthinking, fanatical stereotype sought to be perpetuated by the Hindutva right. He is broadminded, smart, tolerant and witty. Here is the link:

Reading it had me in splits. Visit it for a refreshing view on the goings on in our country.

Peace.

New beginnings
Hello. I welcome all you liberal, egalitarian Indians to this community and request you to contribute to the dialogue towards making a more tolerant, peaceful, and modern India. The last few months have not been conducive towards peace in our country. The country has been rocked by several terrorist strikes that have taken innocent lives and threaten to tear our nation apart. The country's creaking law enforcement structure seems ill-equipped to face this new challenge.

As if Islamic terrorism was not enough, we now have the rising spectre of Hindutva-inspired terrorism. The alleged involvement of Hindutva organizations in the Malegaon blasts raises the scary prospect of fundmentalists of different shades setting afire the country's social fabric and creating an atmosphere of fear, violence and terror where the common man cannot go about his/her everyday business of looking after themselves and their family and aspiring to a prosperous future.

We believe fundamentalists claiming allegiance to different religions who provoke people into violence ultimately belong to the same ilk, and religiously motivated zealots are unaware of the core philosophy of their own faiths.

It is with an aim to give voice to the intelligent, enlightened Indians who understand the country's priorities and want to see a strong, modern, prosperous India that this community has been started. Let's talk amongst ourselves and try to discuss ways to save this country from hate and terror.

Please feel free to speak your mind here, but be respectful of other people's opinions and don't start flame wars. Together, we can make this a success.
